Independent Living for Children

CILNM serves people of all ages and all disabilities Frequently we are asked to assist in educational areas for children.

IL Skills for Children

Your child with a disability can benefit from learning IL skills at a different level that will prepare them for Independence in their future.

A child with a disability can work on building self esteem and understanding what self-esteem is and how it is developed.

Another area of importance is, understanding their disability and how it affects their lives. Disability Awareness is important because we need to educate people on issues they may not understand. The best person to educate about disability is the person with the disability.

Promoting disability pride should begin early in a person's life. Learning about similarities and differences in people promotes disability pride because when we begin to embrace our differences we are able to embrace those qualities that make us different and unique. This is also a part of self-esteem.

Other areas important to address at a younger age are:

  • Socialization skills
  • Self-advocacy
  • Peer relationships
  • Communication skills

CIL staff can assist in these areas as requested.
