How Are CILs
Funded?
Centers for
independent living are private non-profit 501(c)3 organizations. We are
run by a board of directors who are primarily people with
disabilities.
Centers
for Independent Living receive our funding from a variety of sources.
Federal government funding, State government funding, Foundations, earning fees
for some of our services and from local giving.
Like any business, the service
we are able to provide to people with disabilities, their families and the
communities that they live in, is directly related to the amount of funding we
are able to obtain to pay for staff and related expenses. Centers for
Independent Living are good stewards of the funds they receive.
Because a large percentage of
the funds we use to operate are state and federal dollars, we often look for
assistance from citizens to speak on our behalf. Letters written to
legislators from people that we assist are always welcome and really do make a
difference. They have the most impact when a consumer or family member
expresses the difference CIL services have made in their lives. We can
talk forever about what impact we are having in people's lives, but when you
contact your elected officials and tell them - they take notice. Thank you
for your efforts!
